As someone working with companies on their social media strategy, I know many of you are interested in creating a strategy as part of a social media audit to see what you can do to better maximize social media, or to see what is possible. It’s best expressed by the question I always get: “Do I have to hire someone to do this?”
The First Accounting Musc Video produced in Second Life. The song (a parody of “If I Were a Carpenter”) tells the story of two auditors (would-be auditors) in love, who view their relationship through the lens of accounting and auditing. They look for ‘evidence’ of each other’s love, worry about ‘second guessing,’ and wonder if they’ll get ‘sale treatment’ (get married), or only be “borrowed.” An eclectic ensemble cast, “The MACPA Players & Blogger Friends,” was then formed, featuring A-list bloggers and MACPA staff. (Additional bloggers had scheduling conflicts precluding them from participating in the production, but provided moral support to their colleagues in their ‘acting’ debut.) Although I had met half the bloggers before in various venues (Tom Hood, Bill Sheridan, Colleen Cunningham, Gail Perry, Tom Selling, Mark Jankowski), it was the first time I ‘met’ the other bloggers (abeit virtually, in Second Life) who I only knew from their blogs, twitter, etc., including Michelle Golden, Dave Albrecht, and Darla Sycamore. The brainstorm of Edith Orenstein (Financial Executives International) who wrote the lyrics and then engaged The Singing CPA, Steven Zelin to produce the music. She then enlisted Tom Hood (Maryland Association of CPAs) to build the sets and produce te video using their CPA Island in the virtual world of Second Life. “The news of the firings came just before the holidays last December. Some of us workers …had given decades of our lives to the Pacific Steel Casting Company in West Berkeley. We worked in awful conditions, were denied proper breaks, lacked adequate eating facilities and paid into a pension we are now being denied access to. We depended on this job to provide for our families, pay rent and put food on the table. However after years of benefiting from a lower paid undocumented worker base, the company submitted to a federal immigration audit which led to 200 of us being fired. The audits check the validity of Social Security numbers and demand the firing of any worker who is undocumented and cannot provide a social. There have been tens of thousands of these audits throughout the country devastating immigrant families and communities as part of a federal policy that seeks to cause so much pain and hardship to migrant families that they might “self deport”. The policies have caused much pain in our community but the self deportation theory has proven a failure. In this particular case the workers refuse to self deport or to walk away with their heads down in defeat. The workers have organized themselves to fight not only for their own losses but also against the exploitation of their citizen co-workers.
